In 2018, I stood at the threshold of a new chapter in my life, filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation as I approached a shelter in Brooksville, Florida. 

After years of silence from my former pet life, the thought of adopting a dog once again stirred my soul. 

It had been nearly a decade since I had to part ways with my beloved dog, Jake, whose loyal presence had brightened my life for ten joyful years. 

But those later years were marred by the dark cloud of addiction, which ultimately led to a heartbreaking decision: to give him up for foster care when my struggles with methamphetamine and alcohol rendered me unable to care for him. 

On that devastating day, I can still picture Jake, his ears back, eyes filled with sadness, tail wagging weakly as if he understood that I was leaving him for good. 

Forgiveness has taken years to cultivate within me for that choice, but I have come to learn that, at that moment, it was the kindest thing I could do for him, ensuring he would be cared for and loved.

Enter Blaze. At just nine months old, he strolled into my life, ready to ignite a spark of joy I thought I had lost forever. 

As I crouched down to meet him, our eyes connected, and in that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of hope and love. I knew instinctively that I would cherish him fiercely, providing him a life filled with adventure, care, and companionship. 

Together, we’ve forged a bond built on trust, with my dedication shining through in every play session, long walk, and cherished moment snuggled in bed at night. 

Blaze has become not only a beloved pet but also a fixture at my fitness studio, capturing the hearts of my clients with his intelligence and kindness. 

Every wag of his tail and playful bark reminds me of my unbreakable promise: I will never let him down, never let him feel abandoned, and never return to the destructive patterns of my past.

As I reflect on my journey, I carry Jake’s memory with me, honoring the love we shared while ensuring that Blaze receives two times the affection I gave before. 

I remember Jake every day, knowing that his spirit guides me forward. 

While he passed away during the tumultuous years of incarceration, I trust that the universe gave him the love and stability I was unable to provide. 

My vow to Blaze is unwavering: he will never see me high, drunk, or out of control. 

I will be the responsible, loving companion he deserves because I have learned the true value of love through both my deepest sorrow and my newfound joy. 

Blaze is the embodiment of my redemption, and as I look into his eager eyes, I embrace the incredible journey of forgiveness, healing, and unconditional love that connects me to both my past and my present.
